Crew Chief
Eugene “Pop” Carlsward was a cornerstone of the Curtis Smith Racing legacy and one of the true architects behind its sustained success for decades. Serving as crew chief for Curtis Smith Sr. from the early 1980s until his passing, Eugene’s influence stretched far beyond the pit area—he was a mentor, leader, and trusted family figure whose impact is still felt today.
Known for his calm, steady approach under pressure, Eugene played a pivotal role in some of the most successful years in team history. He was instrumental in guiding Curtis Smith Sr. to the 1996 IHRA Stock Eliminator World Championship, a crowning achievement that cemented their place among the sport’s elite. In addition, Eugene was a key contributor to all 17 of Curtis’ national event victories, helping build a winning program rooted in consistency, preparation, and performance.
Before becoming a legendary crew chief, Eugene’s racing background was deeply rooted in hands-on experience. He began his career working on Nitro Funny Cars, gaining valuable knowledge in high-horsepower competition. He also spent time behind the wheel himself, competing in IHRA Pure Stock, giving him a driver’s perspective that would later enhance his effectiveness on the starting line and in race-day decisions.
More than just a crew chief, Eugene “Pop” Carlsward was a patriarch of the Smith family racing dynasty. His leadership, work ethic, and passion for the sport helped shape not only race cars, but generations of racers. His legacy lives on in every pass down the track, every win earned, and in the foundation he helped build for Curtis Smith Racing.
