For more than 70 years, Curtis Smith Racing has carried the proud tradition of one of drag racing’s most respected families — the Smiths. What started in the 1950s with Earl “Cigar Earl” Smith and his brand-new Chevrolet on the beaches of Daytona has grown into a multi-generational story of dedication, craftsmanship, and competitive excellence.
Earl’s passion for racing and his natural mechanical talent laid the foundation for everything to come. He became one of the sport’s early pioneers, running Chevrolets at NHRA and IHRA events across the Southeast, earning victories and respect wherever he went. Known for his trademark cigar and hard work ethic, Earl set a standard that still guides the team today.
The second generation, Curtis Smith, elevated the family legacy to national prominence. Behind the wheel of legendary machines like Shakedown and Hot Stuff, Curtis became one of the winningest IHRA Stock Eliminator drivers in history, earning multiple national event wins and the 1996 IHRA Stock Eliminator World Championship. His success cemented the Smith name among the all-time greats of sportsman drag racing.
Now, the third generation — Curt Smith Jr. — proudly carries the family banner forward. Competing across the Southeast in NHRA and CCRA events, Curt Jr. races the team’s newest car, “Shakedown 2,” a tribute to the family’s most famous machine. In recent seasons, he’s captured multiple wins, including an impressive double-up victory weekend at Darlington Dragway, and was recognized as the CCRA Most Improved Driver of 2023.
