In 1986 and 1987, Curtis Smith continued to build his legacy at one of drag racing’s most storied facilities—Rockingham Dragway.
Those two seasons, Curtis captured back-to-back victories at the IHRA U.S. Open Nationals, one of the most prestigious events on the IHRA calendar. Winning the race once was an accomplishment; winning it twice in a row placed Curtis in elite company and further established his mastery of the Rockingham surface.
Rockingham was more than just another stop on the schedule—it was a place where Curtis excelled. Round after round, year after year, he delivered under pressure, adding win after win at the legendary track. By the end of his career, those performances helped propel him to an incredible milestone: the sixth most wins in Rockingham Dragway history.
The consecutive U.S. Open Nationals victories in 1986 and 1987 weren’t just highlights—they were proof that Curtis Smith was one of the most consistent and formidable competitors ever to race at “The Rock.”
