In 1974, the next chapter of the Smith racing legacy began.
Second-generation racer Curtis Smith stepped onto the national stage, carrying the family name that Earl had built with years of hard work and Chevrolet power. In his very first IHRA National Event, Curtis showed that the talent ran deep. With composure beyond his years and a natural feel for the car, he drove round after round, earning respect from seasoned competitors.
By day’s end, Curtis brought home runner-up honors, an incredible achievement for a debut and a clear signal that a new force had arrived. What began that weekend would grow into a future Hall of Fame career, rooted in family tradition, determination, and a passion for drag racing passed down through generations.
In 1974, the torch wasn’t just passed—it was firmly in the hands of the next Smith ready to carry it forward.
